The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Dorothy and Charles Clark Gallery will be showing works from Susan Fitzsimmons, TSG Board Member and Chair of the Art Department at the newly reinvented UTRGV. Â Sentinels & Guardians will be on display from September 1st through the 28th, with the artist reception taking place on Tuesday, Saptember 15th from 5:00-7:00pm.
To quote Fitzsimmons:
“We live in an increasingly virtual and transient world and creating objects, things that can only be experienced in the real, physical world, is central to my art practice. The experience of seeing real objects is wonderfully different from the two-dimensional images we see on our devices.
Past cultures created art as a way of transmitting values, often by the representation of powerful ancestral beings, as sentinels or guardians of culture and myth. Myths and the physical portrayal of the mystical as a way to transmit values have existed in virtual all cultures. Many of the sculpture titles come from myths and cultures in other times and other places. My sculptures are a way of transmitting the central myths that shaped both our collective and my personal psyche.”
